Here are three reasons why it may be better to be fired rather than quitting your job.
Hi, my name is Doug Lipsky. I am an employment lawyer.
First, you are more likely to receive severance if you are fired rather than if you quit. Many employers are more willing to offer severance when they are the ones ending the employment relationship.
Second, if you believe you were subjected to unlawful conduct at work, quitting can sometimes make your case harder to prove. If your employer fires you after issues arise, that may support your claim that you were treated unlawfully.
Third, quitting your job can jeopardize your ability to collect unemployment benefits. In most states, employees who voluntarily quit are not eligible for unemployment benefits, although there are some exceptions depending on the circumstances.
For these reasons, it is often better to be fired rather than quitting your job.
