Your employer owes you money if they are doing any one of these three things.

Hi, my name is Doug Lipsky, and I am an employment lawyer.

First, if you are an hourly employee and you work more than 40 hours in a week, your employer must pay you time and a half for those overtime hours. If they are not paying overtime, they are breaking the law and they owe you that money.

Second, if you show up to work and your employer tells you not to clock in yet but asks you to start doing work anyway, that is illegal. The same is true if your employer asks you to clock out and then continue working. You must be paid for all time you spend working, including time before you clock in and after you clock out.

Third, if your employer automatically deducts a 30 minute meal break from your time but you never actually take that break, or your break is interrupted by a customer or a manager asking you to do something, that time must be paid.

If your employer is not paying you for that time, they are breaking the law and they owe you those wages.
