Your employer has a legal duty to accommodate you if you are pregnant.

Hi, my name is Doug Lipsky, and I am an employment lawyer.

Pregnancy is considered a disability under numerous state and federal laws. Because of that, it triggers certain obligations for employers, including the duty to provide reasonable accommodations.

There are certain types of accommodations that a pregnant employee can request that an employer may be required to grant.

For example, a pregnant employee may need time off to attend doctor’s appointments. They may need an ergonomic chair or a back pillow to help with the discomfort that can come with pregnancy. They may also need additional breaks during the workday.

These are examples of accommodations that courts often consider reasonable.

If you need an accommodation because you are pregnant, it is very important to put that request in writing.

Send an email to your supervisor or to human resources so there is a clear record of your request and what is happening.
